My Sewing Career
My name is Deidrid Armour.
I was born in Falmouth, Jamaica and I am the eldest child of Evett Goodwin.
She is the inspiration behind my career…
After graduating from St. Andrew High School for Girls in Kingston, I was at a standstill, but not for long.
My mom asked me, “What are you going to do now that you are not qualified for nursing school?”
I replied, “I don’t know.”
Her response to me will live with me forever. It was…
“While you figure out what you want to do, I’m sending you to sewing school. You don’t have to make sewing your career, but keep in mind, people wear clothes wherever you go.”
She had little means and despite having to care for my two brothers, George and Steve, she sent me to the best sewing school in Kingston.
I graduated from MiLady’s School of Fashion in 1982.
Mother provided for my first shop, Rockstone Fashions, by enclosing a part of our wrap around veranda.
That was 40 years ago.
I am so proud to say that with Jehovah’s help I made a successful career out of sewing and I would not trade my skills for anything else.
Thank you Mom.
